Edo to launch first open data portal in Africa

BENIN—GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State will, tomorrow, launch Nigeria’s first Open Data Portal in Benin.
Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Peter Okhiria, in a statement, said that Edo will become the first state in Nigeria and the first sub-national government in Africa to launch an Open Data Portal.
He said that the state would join over 200 governments worldwide that are currently pursuing Open Data initiative.
He added that the Open Data was part of activities marking the 2013 Edo State Technology Day with the theme Fostering Governance with Technology.
He said: “The event is a platform for leaders and participants in the technology sector from states across Nigeria to showcase products and innovations and to highlight information technology, IT, initiatives of governments and companies.”
He added that the Open Data has the potential to generate innovative new applications and services that would create new economic opportunities and jobs.
